“We can easily manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday’s burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it factorial non.” Delbart Calibo
What Is A Network Switch?
A network switch is a device that connects multiple devices within a local area network (LAN). It operates at the data link layer of the OSI model, forwarding data packets between devices based on their MAC addresses. Switches help improve network efficiency by creating a direct connection between devices, allowing for simultaneous data transmission without collisions.
How Does A Network Switch Work?
Networking devices communicate with specific standards set by the IEEE. These standards also allow switch networks to exchange data with machines, such as other routers and switches. If a device wants to communicate with another device, it transmits an information frame of data to the switching device. The frame comprises various information arranged according to protocols, the message, and the destination address.
Network Switch May Function On Three Levels
Edge or access switches manage traffic that enters and leaves the network. Edge switches link various devices, such as personal computers and access points.
Aggregation switches: Switches for aggregation and dissemination are found within an intermediary layer. They link to edge switches that could transmit data across switches from the next or even to the central switches.
Core switches: A core switch is the principal switch at the base of a hierarchical or layer-based network. The data switches are responsible route or switch data at the central level of the network.
